Scoping Trip in Tonga

In 2019 Larissa and Janette, founders of Pacific Med Tech, spent a week in Tonga speaking with the Ministry of Health team, and the team at the Vaiola Hospital to better understand the biomedical engineering environment. The trip was incredibly insightful thanks to the openness of the Tongan MOH and biomedical engineer, and was the seed that sparked PMT’s establishment.

The top three findings:

1 – The team are both skilled and passionate about providing the best health care possible for the people of Tonga.

2 – The limitations they face lie in access to good equipment, and capacity to service, maintain and replace the equipment they have.

3 – With some capacity support, the team would be better able to direct their efforts and energies toward the areas and work that only they can do.

PMT in Venture Lab

Following the win at the 2019 Velocity competition for the social enterprise category, Pacific Med Tech was involved in the 2020 Auckland University Venture Lab accelerator programme. The programme ran across six months and was focused on supporting the start up through some crucial early development stages.
